Solid backup in case of data loss

Question

Hello,

I've spent hours and went through a lot to get my family's information and create my family tree.

I was wondering, if familyecho.com ever gets deleted, server lost, data removed, all the good stuff, what happens to our work?

Will the current save methods suffice to keep all the information, so that I don't have to do the research all over again?
Will the .html file still open? Will the photos still be there?

What's the best method to guarantee my information won't be lost?

You shouldn't rely on anyone else to have backups. No matter how good FamilyEcho's backups are, unexpected things can and do happen. But it is very easy to make a backup that will work in any other genealogy program. Click on "Download / export this family..." in the bottom part of the gray sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen. Choose GEDCOM as the format and download your data. It is a good idea to do this every time you make a significant update to your family tree. That way, you know that your family tree is always safe, no matter what happens to the website.

So GEDCOM is a universal file format that will work with any other software and it will keep ALL the data (photos, relationships, bio info etc.) ?

Everything EXCEPT: Photos, Blog, and Photo Site. I am assuming that Blog and Photo Site are not included because there is not a similar GEDCOM field. Photos are not included because the GEDCOM format is a single text file.

Clearly it is the photos that gets people. I'm pretty sure that there is not a way to back them up from within Family Echo. So you'll want to make sure you have them in a well organized folder system somewhere.

GEDCOM files are the defacto standard for all genealogical software. They can all import that file type and rebuild your family tree from it.
