Family Information Before 1799

First, I LOVE Family Echo!!!  Over the past few years I've been looking for a family tree program that would give me some flexability in adding step-parents and step-children.  I've tried quite a few and even paid for a couple, but it was wasted time because as I got into it, I couldn't get the results I wanted.  Anyway, Family Echo is easy, straight-forward and will let you go all over the place.  I LOVE it!

I've got one side of the family back to 1799 and have hit a block wall.  I'm finding very little before that point.  Any suggestions on where I can go to get older information.  Of course it doesn't help that my 4 or 5 times grandfather's (born in 1799) name is Samuel Smith. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

A lot of Ancestry's information is free, but not all of it by any means. I would also recommend The Peerage, and also geni.com .
