Is there a way to indicate that an entry is uncertain, unconfirmed, only a possibility?

I have at least one person in my tree whose very existence I have not been able to confirm (and now I can't find the source of the info). This alleged person is a crucial link between the generations above and below (and if he's the wrong person, the entire upline would be orphaned). I don't want to delete him in case he turns out to be legit, but neither do I want to just leave him sitting there like he belongs. Short of changing his first name from John to something like "Uncertain John" and mention the uncertainty in the biographical notes, is there any way to make it really obvious that the person may or not be the father of so-and-so? Does the question make sense?

And the related question... should I be able to confirm that this person doesn't belong at that spot in the tree, is there a way to "orphan" the line above him but still keep them in the family? They are all confirmed entries; I just can't confirm the link between them and the next group of well-documented people (which will also be orphaned if I can't confirm that link).
