I tried changing the gerations thing for the parents, children and others, but it just brings me to the oldest person on the chart. What is it for?

This controls the number of generations displayed when you view the tree.  Counting from the selected person, "Parents" controls how many generations of direct ancestors are displayed. " Children" controls how many generations of children/grand children are displayed. "Others" controls how many gereration of other relatives are are displayed (aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins).
