I recommend Ancestry, some of which you can use for free, and The Peerage. A lot of the time you can get a lot of good information by searching up information from the tree, eg 'John Smith married Mary Jones in 1890'.

I like to use Rootsweb.com to look up any type of records. It is totally free, no need to pay for anything.
