Is the friendship option of the Partner list… is it for any friends or for exes that end up just friends

I know that's dumb question cuz if they are exes I just obviously put ex, but I didn't know until know they added friendship and I hope I didn't use it wrong because I was doing a Harry Potter family tree and wanted to add the Marurders, James, Remus, and Sirius as friends maybe include Peter as ex friend if that's possible? Not sure. Maybe I might be dumb. I mean usually the partner feature is usually for romance

Yes, I came across this update today, and ignoring the fact that you can do whatever you want anyways, I'm pretty sure it was meant for important friends to that person that matter to the storyline or something.
