how can I see the whole family tree, the connections are there but only when you click on them

Go top Options (gear at the bottom of your screen) starting from the right the second column the 4th option will be Tree view: switch it from what ever you have on to Complete, you'll know you selected teh right vewing option when the options below Tree view: disappear.
